TitleIIc 6127
KeywordsWater cooler
DescriptionThis water cooler was used to store and cool water. It is hand carved from white stone (rai mutin, T). Various people suggested it was made either in Laga or Venilale. The stone ufu, M was supported by a wooden frame that enabled it to stand upright (as it is photographed). The base of the ufu (which is obscured in the attached photo) is a conical shape. The water dripped through the stone at the base and was collected in a container below. The Makasae word 'ufu' relates to pestle. Ufu, made from wood, are also used in Baguia to pound corn and rice.

The vitirin was also recognised by Sr Bernado Mango Ximenes 9/10/14 in Osso Huna. Xefe de Suco of Haiconi said this was 'lulik' as it was associated with a ceremonial house.
