DescriptionMalu bu'a is used to place and serve betelnut to guests and at cultural events such as ‘dada ai uma lulik nian’ and ‘feto saun ho mane’. The lid is called 'malu bu'a gi no', M. The base is called 'malu bu’a gi mita', M. This basket features a running vine pattern known as ate fu fu, M. The coloured fibres were added and woven on top of the basic basket structure. The technique of adding coloured fibres with create a pattern is called 'bore', M. Ete sina and teri sina are terms that refer to vertical and horizontal weave fronds. The spine of the alasa frond was used to make the edge / rim of the malu bu’a and the lid so as to add structural strength. The purple and green blanket stitch around the base and lip/rim is known as 'waleri'. This basket is also known as retiki, M, in Uatulari, Viqueque district.
