KeywordsLidded baskets with string bag
DescriptionThe string bag encases two colourful lidded baskets (kadi bu'a, M). They were used to carry betelnut (bu’a malus, M) when walking distances to ceremonial gatherings. Kadi bu'a, M is used to serve and store bu’a malus or for storing important objects such as money. Kadi bu'a are used for cultural events such as constructing the ceremonial house ‘dada ai uma lulik nian’ T and bridewealth exchange ‘fetosan umane’, T. This kadi bu'a set contains two baskets with lids. The smaller, upper basket features four legged animal pattern. The larger basket features a geometric pattern. This kadi bu’a has a horse pattern and the coloured fibres were woven onto the basic structure of the baskets with a technique known as ‘bore’. 'Ete sina' and 'teri sina' are terms that refer to vertically and horizontally woven fronds. The spine of the alasa frond was used to make the edge / rim of the kadi bu’a so as to add structural strength. The repeated blanket stitch in hot pink fibre is a technique known as 'waleri', M.
